Contributing Data to the IHO-DCDB

The IHO Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB) is the recognized IHO repository for all deep ocean bathymetric data collected by hydrographic, oceanographic and other vessels.

IHO Member States and other organizations can contribute deep water bathymetric data (greater than 100 metres), to the IHO DCDB. Data can be transferred to the DCDB via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), e-mail, CD and DVD or other mutually agreed upon digital media. Digital media sent by mail, should be addressed to;
NOAA/NGDC
E/GC3 325 Broadway
Boulder, CO USA 80305-3328
Data formats - all data should preferably be in the MGD77 exchange format, however any other well documented format is acceptable.

Background Information

At the beginning of the 20th century a group of far sighted geographers, oceanographers and hydrographers, under the leadership of Prince Albert 1st of Monaco, initiated the preparation of a global series of bathymetric charts which became known as the General Bathymetric Charts of the Ocean (GEBCO).

The first GEBCO maps were based on relatively few deep sea soundings collected using lead lines.  This initiated the collection of ocean bathymetry by volunteer Hydrographic Organizations and other scientific and academic organizations.

Deep sea bathymetric data are sent to the IHO Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB), where they are checked for consistency with any existing data and added to the data repository.  These data are made available for scientific use and can be downloaded from the IHO DCDB.
